April 1, 2016 Sun, Chicks & A Bear

Jesse enjoying the warm sun and dry earth.

Wednesday 3/30. JB left for Down There a little before 9:00 am and was able to get down and back with no problems.  He didn't get home til 4:30 pm though as the patient before him had some issues, so his appointment was delayed an hour.  He ran some errands and picked up a few groceries.

This was not a day to be inside.  I did the laundry, which was underwear, and hung the socks outside.  Brought in the wood and took the dogs on their walk.  There are several more balsam root plants popping up on the south ridge.  And there was a warm breeze coming up from the canyon.  Such an incredible morning!

I cleaned fir cones and small branches off the gravel, and was able to pick a handful of greens for the girls.  So the dogs and I spent most of the day outside, which included sitting on my bench on the north ridge for a while, and also in the sun on the porch.

All the songs from Grease are still playing in my head, which is much better than the Mickey Mouse Club theme song which had been stuck there for a few days.  Don't ask.

Larry had told us that he saw the first bear of the year on Monday up the hill south of their house.  Looked to be a big one, about 300 lbs.  So now we know they are out and about.

Our high for this wonderful spring day was 56.  Didn't need need a coat, just a hoodie.

We watched The Blind Side with Sandra Bullock this evening.  Excellent!

Thursday 3/31. It was another lovely spring morning with blue skies and a temp of 46.  I put in a little fire at 6:30 am when the dogs wanted out, but we didn't have one for the rest of the day.

JB and I installed 50 foot of cable for the winch on Miss Kitty to replace the 10 foot one that came apart at one end.

After lunch I cleared up some more small branches from the floor of the grove, while JB baked some banana bread.  Then we sat on the porch just enjoying the afternoon.  I remembered that the chain and one of the straps we used to try to pull Miss Kitty out were still down the road around the tree, so the dogs and I walked down to get them.  I could have driven Miss Kitty, but I really needed the exercise and the dogs are always up for a walk.  I took the sled to bring them back up on (the strap and chain, not the dogs).  There is quite a stream racing down our drive, under the snow most of the way.  It begins as barely a rivelet flowing from the south side of our house, across the yard and to the drive in a small canal I created and lined with rocks.  As tiny as it is, I love to watch it.

This is the first day I did not have to bring in fire wood, as we hadn't used that much in the past day or two.  A little disconcerting.  Like the first day in the Fall that you do not have to water the garden because there is nothing left to water.

This has been quite a sudden switch from winter to spring.  March waited til its last three days to be a lamb, but these have been three incredible days.  The girls gave us two eggs today, so our total for the month is 35!  We also received 14" of snow and almost 2" of rain in March.  Our total snowfall for this winter was 116" or 9-2/3 feet!

Larry and Elsie are going to pick up chicks tomorrow morning before work.  They are going to get several new ones for themselves and three Barred Rocks for us.  They will keep them at the shop under a warming light for a month or so, then bring them to their house for a few weeks.  So it will be a couple months before we get them and they are big enough to be outside.  I will definitely be going down to visit and hold them.

We watched Mrs. Doubtfire this evening which is another favorite of ours.  Actually anything with Robin Williams in it is a favorite.

Friday 4/1. It is 46 and clear this morning.  Looks to be another perfect spring day in which to introduce April.

Thought for the day: No one is ever old enough to know better.  Holbrook Jackson
