Then: The First Part of October 2010 Now: August 5, 2011

Painted battery/generator shed

Fall colors still brilliant along our road in mid-October

Then: The First of October 2010

October 1 and JB had to go Down There for a new battery for MAX, new and sharpened chain saw blades, groceries, etc. It was a beautiful day so I started painting the battery room/generator shed. We both finished it on the 2nd and then split a couple loads of wood. On the 3rd, we split seven loads of wood and JB worked on getting MAX ready for winter use. Everything but putting on the tracks.

We have had a very vocal frog under the house for about a month now, and in the past week there have been a couple very loud ones outside. We get serenaded every evening.

We decided to stack a full three rows of fire wood behind the house instead of the 2-1/2 we already had. So now we about 5 cords back there. We are finishing up stacking it on the porch. On the 5th we loaded the trailer with small bark and pieces from around the splitter and drove it down the road to fill in the potholes. On the way back we filled the trailer with downed wood that was along the sides of the road.

On the 6th & 7th we primed and painted the loft outside door. Not real easy to do on a tall ladder that is stretched over three rows of stacked wood. Will have to do touch ups next year when we get the deck built. But at least it is protected from the weather. We really should have painted it a couple years ago.

On the 7th, Elsie and I attended a class on canning meat. We both are looking forward to giving it a try. We both also had skunks visit us early that morning! Thank goodness the dogs were not outside. We just got a bit of their lovely scent around the house.

Was thinking about all the advice we've received while building and living Up Here, and for me advice is like recipes - I rarely end up using it exactly as it was given, but rather modify it for my own needs, tastes and experience. And most of my recipes turn out very well, thank you!

Now: August 5, 2011

JB's visit to the dentist got him another appointment today with a different dentist to have two teeth extracted. He has to be there at nine, so we will be leaving about 7:30. Oh, goodie. . . I shouldn't complain, he's the one who is getting his teeth pulled. He is on antibiotics, so he is feeling much better for now. I'll take the opportunity to take some recycle with us, run a couple errands and buy a couple last minute items for the BBQ on Sunday. Three trips Down There in four days is a bit much, but a daily nap sure helps.

Summer has arrived in full force. The hills are looking a little more brown each day, but there is still a lot more green than usual for August. We spent yesterday mowing, which we have never had to do after mid-July. We also moved all the wood for the deck from where it was dropped to in back of the shop. We couldn't have it dropped where we needed it as the truck would have to drive over where our septic tank is and we don't have a protective cover on it for heavy traffic. But that's okay. Helps keep the muscles toned.

The mama wren is busy taking food to the bird house, but there is no sign of or sound from the male wren. Don't know if he just took off at the site of the hatch lings, or if something happened to him.

For the past few weeks, in his spare time JB has been organizing his new Magic cards and making new decks.  Mike will be Up Here with RJ for a week on Saturday and Uncle JB plans to give him a run for his money!

I bought some ant spray on Tuesday and sprayed inside and out.  Seems to be working, thank goodness.

Don't know what happened to the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer. Has been a lot more crazy than lazy. Aren't we supposed to be retired?!
