December 4, 2015 More Snow & Rime

Rime & snow on a wild rose bush.

Wednesday 12/2. Did laundry & dishes.  Some folks hang their laundry outside in the winter to be freeze dried.  I have nothing against that except for the actual hanging part of it.  It is way too cold to stand out there and clip the clothes onto the line and then take them down later.  Would much rather do it inside where it is warm.  I don't mind looking at the laundry drying.

With more storms and then a melting/freezing trend due in, today was definitely the day to take my Jeep down for the winter.  So JB drove it and I followed in our loaner ATV, which is a Honda Big Red, down to Larry and Elsie's.  Let their dogs out and picked up a package I had delivered to their shop that they brought home yesterday.  It was a nice outing and am so glad we got it done.

Our high for the day was 24, and as we discovered on our drive, we were not fogged in but rather up in the clouds.

Am working on an idea for our Christmas card and have it mostly figured out.

Thursday 12/3. Snow began falling sometime before 4:00 am this morning.  It was still coming down when we got up at 8:00 am, and the temp was 26.  JB and the dogs slogged up to clear off the solar panels and measure the snowfall, while I got the dogs' and chickens' breakfasts ready.  We had received another 2" of snow, so now there is about 5" on the ground everywhere.  There was a very thin layer of ice under the new snow, and the snow itself made a light rustle as it landed on my coat.

I can tell immediately upon waking up about how cold it is outside by the temperature in our bedroom.  There is a subtle difference between the mid to high twenties and the low twenties to high teens.  Then another subtle difference between the high and low teens.  And another difference between that and the single digits.  However, there is a huge difference between the twenties and the single digits.  After the 8 degrees we experienced, the mid twenties seem almost warm.  Our high today was 29.  Almost balmy.

JB used the tractor to clear basic walkways.  He couldn't get the snow blower started, so will try again tomorrow.  It worked just fine last winter.  He had emptied all the gas out of it in the Spring and put fresh in today, so don't know what the problem is.

Can't believe it is December already.  It seems as though we are racing towards Christmas.  Probably because I am not nearly ready.

Snow quit falling a little after 9:00 am, but then was off and on throughout the day.  And a very dark day it was, as if it was 4:00 pm beginning at dawn.  Had to run the generator this evening for an hour to recharge the batteries.

Friday 12/4. It is 34 and overcast this morning with a light wind.  The warming trend made for a very noisy night as the ice and snow were sporadically roaring off the roof.

Thought for the day: Happiness is as a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but which if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.  Nathaniel Hawthorne
