Then: June 2009 Now: July 2, 2011

New friends, Dinga and Jesse

Working on the tipi poles, June 2009

Then: June 2009

The first day of June we go Down There to see if Jesse is what the Humane Society claims. Turns out he is, and even better. As I walk up to his cage, he quietly comes over to the door & lets me attach a leash. Then as we walk by all the other cages on the way out, he stops at each one as if to say, "See, I told you she would come for me." He is 3 years old and has already been in two homes.  He and Dinga seem to hit it off, so we all go home together.

As we did for Dinga, we keep him on a leash at first, but just for a week. He is obviously very happy here. Does NOT want to go in the crate we got for him, although he is supposed to be crate trained. He seems ecstatic when we let him up on the couch and makes that end of the couch his own.  The crate goes back to the store.

The first time he and Dinga go off exploring for a while, he comes prancing back so very proud that he has rolled in a fresh cow pie. It is literally packed on him! With gloved hand, I hold him by his collar and hose him down. Fortunately it is a hot day as the water from the cistern is icy cold. And, fortunately for him, he never does that again.

Our main project for the month is building a garbage/recycle shed on the back side of the outhouse.  It will be 8' X 10'.  Right now we have 4 garbage cans attached the outside of the outhouse with bungee cords, with the rest of the garbage and recycle stashed in one side. So far no critter has tried to get into them. The job goes well and we use left over metal from the house for the roof.

We also get all the tipi poles cut and dragged up to the site. We saw off all the branches and I use a draw knife to peel them. This is quite a project, but they seem to be turning out great. Maybe not quite as straight as our original Lodgepole Pine poles, but pretty good, considering. We stand them into position and will let them dry. We want to have the tipi up for our first 4th of July family bbq.

We are trying to get our son and family out here from the east coast for July 4th, but are concerned that the grandchildren might be too young for the mountain, especially because our two year old granddaughter is such a pistol! Finally our son suggests that we come to visit them for a week. He will pay for the trip as it is cheaper for the two of us to fly out there, than the four of them out here. It is all set and we will leave on July 7.

Now: July 2, 2011

What a beautiful day yesterday was! JB finished mowing, and I cleaned and organized inside. Then we vacuumed out our Jeeps. I put a new bag in the Shop Vac and I'm sure we filled it, what with 3 years worth of dirt, mouse nests, pine needles, dog hair, etc.  (Hey, it's a Jeep!) Did the wash & hung it out, plus aired out some of the blankets we have on the couch and love seat. The cushions haven't seen daylight since we moved Up Here.

Jesse has stayed away from the cow pies, but he does have a penchant for bear scat.  Thank goodness deer just make little pellets!  Giving him a bath is quiet easy though, and he gets several a year.

Mike came up for the afternoon, while RJ cleaned up his place for guests. Four of those coming up for the weekend will stay down with him at his cabin.  There will actually be 10 of us instead of 8.  JB's brother, Rick, and his wife, Suzie, will stay in our tipi. JB and Mike played magic cards, while I took a nap (I love my naps). RJ came up for dinner, after which we played Apples to Apples. What a fun game! We plan to play it Sunday when everyone is here.

I am so glad that friends and family look forward to their visits to Rose Camp. Kind of like a dude ranch without the horses and cows. A mountain retreat. I simply cannot imagine living Down There any more. Every time I go to town I suffer from sensory overload.
